A suspect charged in the death of nursing student Laken Hope Riley at the University of Georgia has opted not to pursue bond, as shown in court documents. Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, currently detained at the Athens-Clarke County jail, faces charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and more. Riley's body was found on UGA's intramural fields after she went for a run in the morning. Ibarra, accused of causing Riley great bodily harm with intent to murder, allegedly disfigured her skull and moved her to a secluded area.
Jose Antonio Ibarra's decision not to apply for bond was communicated through his public defenders, who stated that a bail hearing should not be scheduled without a bond motion from the defense. Ibarra's brother, Diego Jose Ibarra, also in custody, faces charges related to a fake green card and multiple reentry incidents. The case is adding fuel to the national conversation on immigration and border policies.
In response to protests demanding his resignation, Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz clarified that Athens is not a sanctuary city and emphasized that accountability for Riley's death lies solely with the perpetrator. Diego Ibarra, monitored under ICE's Alternatives to Detention program, has a complex history of reentries and arrests. ICE officials have requested advanced notifications of Diego's release from custody.
The community continues to grapple with the tragedy, with ICE monitoring thousands of noncitizens in the Atlanta field office region via various methods, such as smartphone apps with facial recognition, ankle monitors, and telephone check-ins.
