In a dramatic turn of events, Jaremy Smith, the suspect wanted for the killing of New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare, has been captured after a pursuit and officer-involved shooting, according to authorities.

The incident occurred on Friday morning around 5:30 a.m. on Interstate 40 near mile marker 318 when Smith, a 32-year-old resident of South Carolina, shot Officer Hare after pulling over to the side of the road due to a flat tire.

At a news briefing, New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler expressed gratitude to the community and law enforcement partners for their assistance, stating, "Yesterday we said that we would bring Jaremy Smith to justice. There was nowhere that he could run, that there is nowhere that he could hide. And today, thanks to our community, to our fellow law enforcement partners, we were able to do that."

Authorities were able to track down Smith following a tip from a gas station employee in Alburquerque earlier this morning, as confirmed by Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen. A foot pursuit ensued, during which shots were fired, resulting in Smith being struck by gunfire. He is currently recovering at a local hospital, and no deputies were harmed during the arrest.

Meanwhile, an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Police officials revealed that on the day of the shooting, Smith was attempting to flag down passing motorists when Officer Hare arrived and parked behind him. Smith approached the police car and engaged in a brief conversation about fixing the tire. Shockingly, Smith then pulled out a gun and shot Officer Hare. He proceeded to shoot Hare again before pushing him into the passenger seat and driving away in the police vehicle. The abandoned vehicle was found shortly after.

In a heart-wrenching statement, Chief Weisler shared, "Officer Hare died serving his state and his community. On a cold, dark and windy morning, he offered help to a person he thought was in need. That person killed him in cold blood. The last words Officer Hare uttered on this earth was to offer help to a man who was about to kill him." Officer Hare is survived by his girlfriend and two young children.

As the investigation progresses, it has been discovered that Smith was driving a BMW belonging to Phonesia Machado-Fore, a paramedic found dead in Dillon County, South Carolina, on Friday evening. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the cause of her death.

The capture of Jaremy Smith brings a sense of relief to the community and marks a significant step towards justice for the fallen Officer Justin Hare. The law enforcement community and residents mourn the loss of a dedicated officer while showing appreciation for the bravery and determination shown in capturing the suspect.
