### Surfer Fatally Impaled by Swordfish in Indonesia

Tragedy struck the surfing community last Friday when 36-year-old Giulia Manfrini from Turin, Italy, was fatally injured by a swordfish while surfing in the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra. The rare and unfortunate incident occurred as Ms. Manfrini enjoyed the waters of the Mentawai Islands Regency, as reported by local authorities.

Two eyewitnesses reportedly tried to administer first aid to Ms. Manfrini following the attack, where the swordfish pierced her chest. Despite their brave efforts and the subsequent medical care she received at a nearby medical center, she could not be saved. James Colston, who co-founded a travel agency with Manfrini, expressed his sorrow on Instagram, noting the valiant attempts by her partner, local resort staff, and doctors to save her life.

Lahmudin Siregar, the acting head of the Mentawai Islands Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), elaborated on the incident, explaining that the swordfish unexpectedly leaped out of the water and struck Manfrini in the chest. He confirmed that the tragic accident occurred while she was surfing.

Colston also shared his grief and memories of his former colleague, describing the incident as a "freak accident." He mentioned that Manfrini likely passed away doing something she loved in a place she cherished. Colston went on to highlight her enthusiasm for surf, snow, and life, noting that her energetic spirit would be dearly remembered by everyone who knew her.

Fabio Giulivi, the mayor of Venaria Reale in Northern Italy, where Manfrini was originally from, expressed his shock and sorrow over the untimely death. He described her dreams of surfing and opening a travel agency as her "double dream" and lamented the powerlessness felt in the face of such a sudden tragedy.

While previous research indicates attacks by swordfish are rare, they can become dangerous when provoked, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the ocean.
