**Giants Bench Daniel Jones, Starting Tommy DeVito Against Buccaneers**
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The New York Giants have decided to move forward with a quarterback change, benching the struggling Daniel Jones in favor of the fan-favorite Tommy DeVito. Head coach Brian Daboll announced the decision on Monday, as the Giants aim to halt a five-game losing streak. Jones, who is 27 years old, will now serve as the third-string quarterback for the remainder of the season, while veteran Drew Lock continues as the backup.
"Obviously not playing the way any of us want to play, and that on all of us," Daboll remarked. "But felt like this was a decision that we needed to make here to try to spark things, change things up and we went with Tommy again."
Daboll noted that he had a private conversation with Jones on Monday but did not disclose details. Jones reportedly expressed a desire to stay on as the starter. Daboll also remained tight-lipped regarding discussions with co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch.
The Giants are currently 2-8 and appear to be on the path to a second consecutive losing season. The future of several key figures, including Jones — who has two years and $80 million remaining on his contract — Daboll, and general manager Joe Schoen, may be in question. By sidelining Jones for the rest of the season, the team aims to prevent any injuries that could activate a $23 million guarantee in his contract if he were unable to play at the start of the next season.
Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 draft, will remain with the team for the rest of the season. "We had a talk right before the meeting today," Daboll said. "Never easy. Got a lot of respect for how he goes about his business, for how Drew does for how he does. Those aren't easy conversations," he added.
The decision comes after the Giants headed into their bye week following an overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers in Germany on November 10. During the break, the coaching staff reviewed game footage and decided it was time for a change. Daboll also hinted that other players might see increased playing time as the team evaluates its roster.
Jones has had a disappointing season with only eight touchdown passes against seven interceptions. His record has been 3-13 in his last 16 starts, and the Giants currently rank last in the league in scoring, with an average of 15.6 points per game.
