### Diamondbacks' Montgomery Opts for Return Despite Challenging Season
The Arizona Diamondbacks' left-handed pitcher, who struggled to find his form this past season, has chosen to exercise his player option for 2025. Montgomery's decision follows a rocky year after signing a one-year, $25 million contract shortly after Opening Day. His struggles on the mound were compounded by a shift in representation—switching agents from Scott Boras after an unsuccessful search for a long-term deal.
This past season marked a notable downturn for Montgomery, who couldn't find his rhythm for a Diamondbacks team plagued by pitching injuries. Deeming 2024 as his "most difficult season," Montgomery saw a significant decline from his 2023 performance, finishing with a disappointing 6.23 ERA over 117 innings, a stark contrast to his impressive 3.20 ERA the previous year. His struggles culminated in losing his spot in the starting rotation when Eduardo Rodríguez and Merrill Kelly returned from their injuries.
In light of the season's outcome, Diamondbacks' Managing Partner Ken Kendrick expressed his frustration and took responsibility for the decision to sign Montgomery, labeling it a "horrible decision." General Manager Mike Hazen revealed that he has had discussions with Montgomery to address Kendrick's critiques. Despite the past season's challenges, Hazen remains hopeful, expecting an improved performance from Montgomery in the upcoming year.
The Diamondbacks are heading into the offseason with a strong starting rotation, consisting of six pitchers: Zac Gallen, Kelly, Rodríguez, Brandon Pfaadt, Ryne Nelson, and Montgomery. Additionally, they have young talent in Yilber Diaz, Cristian Mena, Slade Cecconi, Tommy Henry, and Blake Walston providing depth. However, questions loom about Montgomery's future value to the team, especially with Gallen, Kelly, and Montgomery all approaching free agency next offseason.
How much of Montgomery's contract the Diamondbacks would need to absorb in a potential trade, along with the interest from other teams willing to take a chance on his pedigree, will play significant roles as the team assesses its roster needs. With critical gaps in the bullpen and a starting lineup that requires reinforcement, the Diamondbacks face strategic decisions in leveraging Montgomery for future gains.
