ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Strong National Museum of Play announced the induction of four beloved toys into its prestigious National Toy Hall of Fame. After an extensive selection process involving votes from toy experts and the public, the newly crowned toys are the Fisher Price Corn-Popper, Cabbage Patch Kids, baseball cards, and Nerf.
Among the inductees, Fisher Price Corn-Popper stands out as a special addition, as it was chosen exclusively based on votes from the public. Known for its plastic dome filled with jumping balls, the Corn-Popper has been a popular toy that has frequently reached the finals but had never been selected until now.
The remaining three toys, baseball cards, Cabbage Patch Kids, and Nerf, were handpicked from a list of 12 finalists by a 23-member committee of play experts. These toys were chosen for their significant impact on generations, their iconic status, and their contributions to innovation in play.
Baseball cards, a longtime favorite among kids and adults alike, have allowed enthusiasts to collect and trade photos of their favorite players. Cabbage Patch Kids, introduced in 1979, provided children with soft and cuddly companions in a world dominated by hard toys and electronics. Meanwhile, Nerf started with a harmless foam ball in the 1960s and has since evolved into a range of blasters for safe and action-packed playtime.
The Strong Museum's National Toy Hall of Fame has been dedicating itself to recognizing toys that have left a lasting impression on society. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the hall of fame, coinciding with the Museum's recent expansion, which added new interactive exhibits and a new home for the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
Notably, Bop It was among the finalists for induction but ultimately fell short. The popular toy was designed by Greek-born toy designer Bob Welch, bringing recognition to his creative talent and cultural background.
With the new additions, the National Toy Hall of Fame now boasts a total of over 80 beloved toys that have left an indelible mark on generations of children. Last year's inductees included the spinning top, Lite-Brite, and the action figures Masters of the Universe.
Visitors to The Strong Museum will have the opportunity to explore and appreciate the rich history and significance of these iconic toys. The National Toy Hall of Fame continues to celebrate the power of play and the toys that have captured the imagination of millions.
