In a record-breaking deal, NBA star Stephen Curry has agreed to a one-year contract extension worth a staggering $62.6 million with the Golden State Warriors. The extension will keep Curry under contract with the team until the 2026-27 season, a significant milestone in his illustrious career.
Curry's agent, Jeff Austin, confirmed the news, highlighting that the contract extension will secure Curry's position as the highest-paid player in the league for the next three seasons. This extension comes on top of Curry's previous four-year, $215 million contract signed in 2022, bringing his total earnings to an estimated $532.7 million by 2026-27.
The 36-year-old point guard has been an integral part of the Warriors' success over the years. After being underpaid during the initial seasons of the team's dynastic run, Curry has since claimed the title of the NBA's highest-paid player since the 2017-18 season and is set to hold that position for an unprecedented 10 consecutive seasons.
Notably, Curry is projected to become the first player in history to earn more than $60 million in a single season when the 2026-27 campaign rolls around. This puts him in an exclusive club of high-earning players, alongside LeBron James and Kevin Durant, who are also on track to surpass the $500 million career earnings mark.
The timing of Curry's contract extension coincides with the expiration of fellow teammate Draymond Green's contract—assuming Green exercises his player option for the 2026-27 season, which is worth $27.7 million. Looking ahead, the Warriors currently have no contracts beyond that year, except for Buddy Hield's $10.1 million 2027-28 player option with only $3.1 million guaranteed. It's worth noting that head coach Steve Kerr is currently under contract with the team through the 2025-26 season.
Curry's contract extension follows his remarkable performance in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he teamed up with LeBron James and Kevin Durant to lead Team USA to a gold medal. Scoring a total of 60 points in the final two games and showcasing his remarkable shooting skills, Curry solidified his status as one of the league's top-tier players.
While Curry continues to demonstrate his exceptional abilities on the court, the question remains whether the Warriors can surround him with a roster that can compete for a fifth championship. The team faced setbacks during the offseason, losing Klay Thompson and Chris Paul but compensating by adding promising players such as De'Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson, and Buddy Hield. Their pursuit of star players like Paul George and Lauri Markkanen, however, did not materialize.
As the Warriors gear up for the upcoming season, they have additional business to attend to, with the eligibility for contract extensions for their lottery picks from the 2021 draft, forward Jonathan Kuminga and wing Moses Moody, until October 21, just before the start of the 2024-25 regular season.
The contract extension solidifies Curry's commitment to the Warriors, showcasing his unwavering dedication to the franchise that drafted him as the seventh overall pick in 2009. As fans eagerly await the start of the season, all eyes will be on Curry and the Warriors as they aim to reclaim their dominance in the NBA.
