In a bid to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season, the Golden State Warriors had the full support of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in their pursuit of Paul George, according to a report by Tim Kawakami of The Athletic. Unfortunately, their efforts to secure a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers were unsuccessful.
Curry and Green were reported to be "100 percent on board" with the idea of bringing George to the Warriors. The team's management believed that a trade deal was close to being finalized, only for George to unexpectedly opt out of the final year of his contract with the Clippers, making him an unrestricted free agent.
The Warriors had been prepared to offer George a max contract extension, but the trade would have required him to opt into his contract for the 2024-25 season. With the trade falling through, Golden State now faces limited options to improve their roster this offseason.
One significant factor contributing to the team's restricted maneuverability is Chris Paul's $30 million salary, which fully guarantees at the start of free agency on Sunday. It appears highly unlikely that the Warriors will bring back the veteran point guard, as team owner Joe Lacob has openly expressed a desire to avoid the luxury tax.
By waiving Paul, the Warriors can ensure they stay under the luxury tax threshold. If they were to guarantee his deal, they would exceed the first tax apron by approximately $4.6 million. Although Lacob seemed willing to pay the tax to acquire a player of George's caliber, there are currently no other obvious trade targets available.
Moreover, the new collective bargaining agreement rules prevent the Warriors from adding George through a sign-and-trade, further complicating their pursuit of the star forward.
With the failed attempt to secure George, the Warriors now face the challenge of improving their roster for the upcoming season within limited resources and options. As free agency progresses, it remains to be seen how they will navigate these hurdles and find alternative avenues to boost their team's competitiveness.
