In a recent episode of the "Madden Monday" podcast, Mark Madden of TribLive and 105.9 The X expressed his concerns over the ongoing Brandon Aiyuk trade saga, questioning whether the Pittsburgh Steelers may have been played by the San Francisco 49ers. Madden suggests that the Niners' decision to engage in contract discussions with Aiyuk again might have been a ploy to gain leverage and show him that desired offers may not materialize.

Aiyuk, currently on a $14.1 million fifth-year option, is seeking an extension beyond that. While reports indicate that the Steelers have agreed to those terms, the stumbling block in the trade negotiations comes from the 49ers' demand for a quality NFL player along with draft picks as compensation.

Names such as Minkah Fitzpatrick, Pat Freiermuth, and George Pickens have allegedly been brought up by the 49ers as potential trade pieces. Madden, however, does not believe the Steelers should part ways with Fitzpatrick, but views players like James Daniels, Alex Highsmith, Dan Moore Jr., and Nick Herbig as more reasonable options.

One of Madden's main criticisms of the Steelers is their historical reluctance to engage in impactful deals, often seeking reasons to avoid them. He doubts whether the Steelers would be willing to make the necessary trade to acquire Aiyuk.

With the trade uncertain, Madden expresses concerns about the Steelers' depth at the receiver position. He believes that if they fail to secure Aiyuk, the team would be left vulnerable in the passing game. Madden worries that opposing defenses would simply shut down Pickens, rendering him useless in critical situations. He further emphasizes that the team's inability to quickly score points when trailing by two scores or more will hinder their chances of winning.

Notably, the "Madden Monday" podcast also touched upon the Steelers' preseason debut against the Houston Texans, Justin Fields' first game at Acrisure Stadium, Sidney Crosby's ongoing contract negotiations, and the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates.

As the Aiyuk trade drama unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the Steelers will overcome their trepidation and make a move that could bolster their receiving corps and overall offensive capabilities.
