The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their 2024 preseason with a 24-17 loss to the Detroit Lions, securing a winless record for only the fourth time in franchise history. While the outcome of exhibition games may not necessarily predict regular season success, the team's performance raises concerns as they head into Week 1.
Despite Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin's refusal to officially name a starting quarterback until the end of the work week, the actions of the team strongly suggest that Russell Wilson will be QB1 to start the season. Wilson received his second consecutive start against the Lions but played only a handful of snaps before being substituted out. Although his performance was limited, Wilson showed promise with a well-executed 32-yard pass to George Pickens. However, Tomlin quickly made the decision to pull Wilson from the game, hinting at his preferred Week 1 starter.
On the other hand, backup quarterback Justin Fields led a touchdown drive of his own after a Lions' fumble gave the Steelers favorable field position. Fields showcased his skills with a 22-yard pass to Mycole Pruitt, setting up a two-yard touchdown run by La'Mical Perine. Despite flashes of brilliance, Fields also demonstrated some of the same errors that plagued him in Chicago, including a fumble caused by confusion over the snap count. It appears that Tomlin has solidified his choice in Wilson as the starting quarterback for the season opener.
The Steelers' front seven once again proved their dominance during the preseason game against the Lions. Despite Detroit not fielding their starters, the majority of Pittsburgh's defensive lineup saw action early in the game. The likes of TJ Watt, Alex Highsmith, Cam Heyward, and Joey Porter Jr. did not suit up, yet the rest of the defense stifled the Lions' offense, forcing punts and recovering a fumble. The Steelers' strong defensive unit will continue to be their backbone throughout the 2024 season, relying on their ability to control the ball and create turnovers.
A standout player from the game was Nick Herbig, who showcased his pass-rushing skills and further solidified his breakout summer. Herbig's performance continuously caught the attention of onlookers, as he disrupted the Lions' offense and played a pivotal role in setting up the Steelers' second touchdown.
While a winless preseason may raise concerns, it is essential to remember that these exhibition games do not always accurately reflect a team's potential for the regular season. The Steelers will now turn their focus to Week 1, where they will face the Atlanta Falcons. The quarterback situation remains uncertain, but it seems increasingly likely that Russell Wilson will be under center for Pittsburgh. The Steelers will count on their formidable front seven and a strong defensive game plan to keep them competitive, aiming for another top-10 ranking by the end of the season.
