During his time on "Star Trek: Discovery," Mitchell portrayed memorable Klingon characters such as Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio. He also lent his voice to multiple characters in an episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Mitchell's illustrious career included roles in "Captain Marvel" and "Miracle," along with appearances in TV shows like "Jericho," "The Astronaut Wives Club," "Ghost Whisperer," and "Switched at Birth."

In 2020, Mitchell bravely revealed his ALS diagnosis, sharing his journey with People magazine. The actor's positive outlook on life and determination to find beauty in his struggles were evident in his interviews, despite having to use a wheelchair since 2019. Mitchell's decision to prioritize his health led him to step down from a lead role in a television show that required relocating to Newfoundland.
