Despite spring not officially starting, allergy sufferers are already experiencing symptoms as pollen levels rise. Dr. Nkiruka Erekosima from Alpha Allergy & Asthma Associates in Silver Spring, Maryland, warns that Juniper and Elm trees are already producing pollen, leading to itchy eyes and runny noses among patients. More trees are expected to release pollen throughout March and April, potentially triggering asthma symptoms such as chest tightness and wheezing.

Erekosima advises allergy sufferers, especially those with asthma, to have a treatment plan in place with their allergist. This plan may include medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. For milder symptoms, over-the-counter nasal saline sprays can help clear out pollens and allergens settled in the nose, while allergy eyedrops can alleviate itchy eyes.

Additionally, individuals are encouraged to take showers after spending time outdoors to remove allergens that may have settled on clothes. Pet owners are also reminded that pets can carry pollen in their fur, so wiping down or bathing pets after walks can help reduce allergen exposure for both the owner and the pet.

As allergy season begins early, it is crucial for sufferers to be proactive in managing symptoms and seeking the advice of healthcare professionals for appropriate treatment.
