### Spirit Airlines Flight Diverted After Gunfire Incident in Port-au-Prince
A Spirit Airlines flight en route from Florida to Port-au-Prince, Haiti was struck by gunfire on Monday, prompting its diversion to the Dominican Republic, as reported by the Miami Herald. The incident resulted in at least one injury, with a flight attendant sustaining a minor bullet graze, according to the Herald's source.
The aircraft managed to land safely despite the alarming turn of events. Spirit Airlines has yet to comment on the incident, which involved a flight departing from Fort Lauderdale, according to a report from Reuters.
Following the gunfire, authorities at Toussaint Louverture International Airport took the measure of grounding all commercial flights. Flight tracking data revealed that JetBlue Airways and Amerijet cargo planes had to reroute away from Haiti as a result of the situation.
This incident marks the second such occurrence in recent weeks. In October, gunfire from armed gangs struck a United Nations helicopter over Port-au-Prince, forcing it to return to the airport without injuring anyone.
The backdrop to these events includes a significant rise in gang activity in Haiti. In March, politically connected gangs executed an insurrection that led to the ousting of the prime minister, the mass escape of over 4,600 prisoners, the closure of Port-au-Prince airport, and the city's effective isolation from the world. Despite these dramatic events, residents have yet to see signs of government control being re-established in the capital.
