In a recent update, SpaceX has revealed its highly anticipated extravehicular activity (EVA) suit design for an upcoming private astronaut mission. The new spacesuits will be worn by the Polaris Dawn crew, who are set to embark on a five-day journey through Earth's orbit. Sponsored by billionaire Jared Isaacman, this mission marks the first of three private astronaut missions scheduled for launch this summer.

The primary objective of the mission is to collect data and conduct various research and experiments while in Earth's orbit. One of the mission's highlights will be the first-ever commercial astronaut spacewalk, which will also be the first to occur from SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft.

Reports suggest that SpaceX encountered challenges during the design process of the new EVA suits, leading to delays for the Polaris Dawn launch. Sources revealed that SpaceX underestimated the amount of work required to convert their pressurized suit design into an EVA suit. However, the company seems to have overcome these obstacles and is now ready to move forward.

The new EVA suits incorporate innovative materials, fabrication processes, and joint designs to enhance flexibility for astronauts during both pressurized and unpressurized scenarios. SpaceX's focus on mobility is evident in the suits' 3D-printed helmet, which features a visor to reduce glare from the sun during spacewalks. Additionally, a Heads-Up Display (HUD) and camera have been integrated into the helmet to provide crucial information on suit pressure, temperature, and relative humidity.

Ensuring the suit's pressurization during spacewalks is a top priority, and the new design includes seals and pressure valves to achieve this. Moreover, the suits have been designed to accommodate different body types, furthering SpaceX's goal of increasing accessibility to space.

Notably, SpaceX's new suits have been constructed with the future colonization of the Moon and Mars in mind. This aligns with the company's overarching vision of expanding humanity's reach across the solar system. By developing versatile suits, SpaceX aims to facilitate future missions to the Red Planet.

The Polaris Dawn crew is eagerly preparing for their mission, scheduled to launch this summer. The private astronauts, equipped with SpaceX's latest spacesuit design, will embark on a five-day journey in SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, orbiting Earth while conducting vital research and making history with the first commercial astronaut spacewalk.
