South Korea Expresses "Grave Concerns" Over China's Use of Water Cannons in the South China Sea

Seoul, South Korea's foreign ministry has voiced deep worries over China's recent deployment of water cannons against Philippine ships in the South China Sea. The ministry states that these actions are heightening tensions in the region and undermining the established maritime order.

The incident took place on Saturday when China's coastguard allegedly used water cannons on a civilian boat that was supplying troops at the Spratly Islands. These islands, known for their territorial disputes between China and the Philippines, are mostly uninhabited.

Following the incident, the Philippines filed a formal protest, claiming that the boat sustained damage and some crew members were injured. In response, Beijing cautioned Manila to act with caution and to seek dialogue. The Chinese government further emphasized that the two countries' relations were at a crucial "crossroads."

Seoul's foreign ministry spokesperson, Lim Soo-suk, expressed the country's concerns during a briefing, stating, "We are gravely concerned about the recent and repeated use of water cannons in the South China Sea. These actions increase tensions in the South China Sea, a major international navigation route used by all countries, including Korea, and undermine efforts to maintain peace, stability, security, and a rules-based maritime order."

The spokesperson stressed the importance of respecting freedom of navigation and overflight for all countries in accordance with international law.

South Korea's Yoon Suk Yeol administration has been actively raising its voice regarding tensions in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. It has consistently opposed any attempts to change the status quo through the use of force.

The South Korean government's concerns over the recent incident reflect the growing unease among regional countries regarding China's assertiveness in the South China Sea. Tensions in this disputed area have long been a source of concern, with multiple nations claiming territorial rights over the islands and their surrounding waters.

As neighboring countries closely monitor these developments, the hope for peaceful dialogue and resolution remains at the forefront to ensure stability and security in the region.
