In recent reports from Android Central, it has been revealed that Sony is significantly reducing its funding for PSVR 2, as well as first-party VR games for the headset. Sources close to the outlet have indicated that the tech giant is making deep cuts to VR game funding internally, raising concerns about the future of virtual reality gaming on PlayStation.

According to a second source, there are currently only a couple of PSVR 2 games in development at Sony, leaving fans uncertain about the potential releases and their timelines. This news has cast doubt on the extent of Sony's commitment to the PSVR 2 platform.

While Sony plans to release a PSVR 2 PC adapter in August, allowing users to connect the headset to a PC for compatibility with SteamVR titles, the announcement has added to the apprehension surrounding the future of the VR device. Priced at $59.99 / £49.99, the adapter offers expanded compatibility but has also been seen as a possible indication of Sony's shifting priorities.

PSVR 2 initially garnered excitement with a strong launch lineup, featuring highly anticipated titles such as Horizon: Call of the Mountain, as well as support for games like Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil 4's remake. The recent inclusion of PSVR 2 games in the PS Plus Premium catalog also offered owners a cost-effective way to access new gaming experiences.

However, the high price tag of the PSVR 2, set at $549.99 / £529.99, has been a significant deterrent for potential consumers, especially considering it surpasses the cost of the PS5 console itself. While it may not be the most expensive VR headset on the market, the competition from more affordable, wireless alternatives such as the Meta Quest 3 has made it a challenging sell, particularly for existing PS5 owners.

If the reports of Sony's reduced support for PSVR 2 prove to be true, it could have implications for the headset's future. On the positive side, it may prompt a price drop, allowing Sony to sell through existing stock and provide more PS5 owners with access to this truly impressive headset.

The future of PSVR 2 remains uncertain, but industry enthusiasts and consumers alike will be eagerly watching for updates from Sony regarding its plans for the platform.
