The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued severe weather forecasts for the southeast half of Lower Michigan, with the potential for a line of severe thunderstorms to develop this afternoon. These storms may bring isolated tornadoes, spotty damaging wind gusts, and small areas of damaging hail.
According to radar forecasts from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., a line of thunderstorms is expected to form around the Saginaw/Bay City area, extending southwest to Lansing between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The storms are forecasted to intensify through 7 p.m., reaching their strongest between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. in areas including the Thumb, Flint, Ann Arbor, and Detroit.
The Storm Prediction Center's forecasts have been consistent, indicating a high confidence in when and where the strongest storms will occur. A severe weather threat map has been issued, highlighting Bay City, Midland (on the edge), Saginaw, Flint, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and the Thumb as the areas at highest risk.
The primary threat during these thunderstorms will be brief, scattered high wind gusts, potentially reaching speeds of 60 to 70 mph. Although the gusts will be short-lived, they can cause significant damage. The forecast indicates a 15 percent chance of severe wind gusts in the affected area.
In addition to the high winds, there is a slight possibility of isolated tornadoes occurring within the same area. The tornado forecast shows a two to four percent chance of tornado activity.
While large hail is not expected to be widespread, the situation may change if the storms develop intensely. Residents within the severe weather threat area are advised to park their vehicles in garages or barns to protect them from potential hail damage. The forecast specifies a five percent chance of one-inch or larger hail in the affected area.
It is essential for residents in the southeastern part of Michigan to stay alert and be prepared as severe weather approaches. It is advisable to seek shelter in a sturdy building before the thunderstorms reach your location. The storms are expected to last approximately half an hour.
Stay tuned for further updates and follow the guidance of local authorities to ensure your safety during this severe weather event.
