Extreme weather conditions are anticipated to hit northern Lower Michigan this evening, as a line of severe thunderstorms is predicted to develop, potentially leading to strong wind gusts, large hail, and even isolated tornadoes. According to the latest radar forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the storms are expected to emerge over northern Michigan and gradually make their way southward, reaching central Lower Michigan during the evening hours.

The Storm Prediction Center has identified the northern half of Lower Michigan and parts of west-central Lower Michigan as areas most likely to experience severe weather associated with these storms. Specifically, the three types of severe weather to watch out for this evening include wind gusts over 57 mph, large hail, and tornadoes. The severe weather threat is illustrated in the yellow shaded area, encompassing Traverse City, Gaylord, and West Branch to the north, while the southern edge of the risk area extends to Grand Rapids, Alma, Ithaca, and the Saginaw/Bay City/Midland area.

The overall severe weather risk is estimated to be 15 percent within the yellow shaded area, while the dark green area indicates a five percent risk. It is worth noting that the individual types of severe weather, such as severe wind gusts and large hail, align with the overall risk area.

Given the relatively slow movement of the storms, residents in northern Michigan should expect severe weather conditions to persist for approximately an hour this evening. Additionally, recent data suggests that the thunderstorm zone will shift towards southern Michigan late tonight, gradually weakening. However, on Sunday, the storm zone is forecasted to move back northward across Lower Michigan, potentially bringing another round of powerful thunderstorms. The highest likelihood for heavier storms on Sunday is in northern Michigan during the late afternoon and evening hours.

As always, it is essential for residents to stay updated and prepared for this weekend's stormy weather conditions. Stay tuned to official weather sources for the latest information and any potential warnings or advisories.
