A significant risk of severe storms is looming over Oklahoma this Saturday, with the potential for a handful of strong tornadoes, softball-sized hail, and 80 mph winds. The forecasted severe weather has prompted meteorologists to issue warnings and advise residents to stay weather-aware throughout the day.

According to KOCO 5 Meteorologist Taylor Cox, the storms are predicted to begin moving into western Oklahoma between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., gradually progressing east into west-central and central parts of the state from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. before eventually reaching the eastern region after 9 p.m. The moderate risk for storms is particularly high in northern and central to west-central Oklahoma, including the OKC metro area.

Residents are urged to remain cautious and vigilant after 4 p.m. as the storms have the potential to produce tornadoes, 80 mph winds, and hail the size of softballs. The tornado risk in the areas under the moderate risk is currently rated 7 out of 10, indicating a significant potential for long-tracked supercells that may generate tornadoes.

Specifically, locations near Alva and Ponca City should be on alert for the possibility of softball-sized hail. The rest of the state could also face hailstones as large as tennis balls and baseballs. Hail events of this magnitude can cause substantial damage to property and pose risks to personal safety.

Additionally, Taylor Cox warns of the potential for damaging wind speeds throughout Oklahoma. Far northeastern Oklahoma could experience gusts reaching 80-90 mph, while wind speeds ranging from 70-80 mph are anticipated between Stillwater, Ponca City, and Bartlesville. The remainder of the state, including the OKC metro, may encounter winds ranging from 60-70 mph.

To stay updated and receive customized weather alerts, residents are encouraged to download the KOCO 5 App. The app provides real-time information and team coverage of the severe weather situation. It can be accessed on both iPhone and Android devices. Furthermore, the KOCO 5 website offers live radar and interactive features for tracking the storms.

As the severe weather situation unfolds, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize safety and adhere to any instructions or warnings issued by local authorities. Paying close attention to the latest severe weather timeline, as provided by meteorologist Taylor Cox, will help residents prepare for the incoming storms in their respective areas.
