ICARO Media Group
This week, Colorado has experienced several days of scorching heat, setting above-average and record-tying temperatures. As the workweek comes to an end, Friday will bring afternoon and evening summer storms, prompting a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day to be issued for the region. The storms are expected to move across the Front Range and into the Eastern Plains.
With Friday temperatures about 10 degrees cooler than the past few days, the day will still be very warm, with highs in the mid-80s. Clouds will linger throughout the day, and storms are predicted to form rapidly in the afternoon. The Pinpoint Weather team anticipates storms to develop along the base of the foothills around 1-2 p.m., before moving into the metropolitan area from 2-4 p.m. By 4-7 p.m., the storms will advance eastward, reaching the plains, and are expected to clear the state by sunset around 8:30 p.m.
The Pinpoint Weather team has identified areas in Denver, along the Front Range, and extending east to the border as under a slight risk for severe storms. The National Weather Service defines a slight risk as an increased confidence in the occurrence of storms that may bring damaging winds, severe hail, and the potential for a tornado. While this level of risk is relatively common and can be experienced a few times per year, residents in these areas are advised to exercise caution if venturing outdoors on Friday afternoon.
Two prominent threats accompanying these storms are strong winds and hail. The Pinpoint Weather team cautions that strong gusty winds will pose a significant danger, especially as the storms shift eastward. Gusts could reach speeds of 60-80 mph. Additionally, large hailstones may be produced as the storms intensify and move across the region. Heavy rainfall is also expected, raising concerns about localized flooding in areas with poor drainage. Motorists are advised to watch out for standing water on roadways.
Fortunately, the storms are projected to subside by late evening, allowing for the return of sunshine on Saturday. Temperatures will climb back into the lower 90s as the weekend progresses.
As always, it is recommended that residents stay prepared and informed about any changes in the forecast. Stay tuned to the Pinpoint Weather team for updates, as well as other important weather information.
