In yet another stellar performance, Scottie Scheffler showcased his unmatched skillset at the RBC Heritage, maintaining his position atop the leaderboard with one round to play. Scheffler's bogey-free 8-under 63 on Saturday at Harbour Town Golf Links propelled him to 16 under, granting him a narrow one-stroke advantage over the rest of the field.
Scheffler, who has been unstoppable this year, recorded his 38th consecutive under-par round and an impressive 16 rounds of 66 or better to start the season. The crowds that initially flocked around the first tee box seemed to follow Scheffler throughout the day, providing an electrifying atmosphere with their cheers and support.
The Texan golfer got off to a hot start, carding birdies on holes 2, 4, 5, and 7, with impressive performances on both par-5s and par-3s. His consistent ball-striking was evident as he missed only three greens during the round. Even when faced with challenges, like a 30-yard short on the par-4 eighth, Scheffler demonstrated his resilience by saving par. On the par-4 ninth, he delivered a remarkable putt from 36 feet to secure another birdie.
Scheffler's excellent play continued on the back nine, where he added three more birdies at holes 11, 15, and 18. He considered his shot on the par-5 15th, where he executed a high draw over the trees, as his best of the day. The resulting pitch and putt for birdie further solidified his control over the tournament.
Despite having minimal practice time due to his recent Masters victory, Scheffler has consistently performed at the highest level throughout the season. With just one finish outside the top 10 this year, a T-19 at The American Express, Scheffler holds a substantial advantage in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Scheffler's dominance has placed him in a league of his own, and he acknowledged the mental challenge of competing against himself. He shared his dedication to staying focused and pushing his limits on the course.
Scheffler's pursuit of his fourth win this season will face strong opposition from Sepp Straka, who trails by a single shot at 15 under after carding a third-round 67. Collin Morikawa is also in contention, one stroke behind Straka, while Ludvig Åberg, Sahith Theegala, and Patrick Rodgers are tied for fourth place.
Acknowledging Scheffler's remarkable run, Straka expressed both admiration and determination, emphasizing the need to remain focused on his own game to avoid disappointment. Straka recognized the magnitude of Scheffler's current form, with few players having witnessed such a dominant streak.
As the RBC Heritage enters its final day, spectators can anticipate an exhilarating battle between the top contenders. With the nerves running high from the first tee, Scheffler's rivals will do everything in their power to halt his remarkable run and challenge his position atop the leaderboard.
