In an impressive season opener against the Packers, former Giants running back Saquon Barkley made an immediate impact as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley's outstanding performance, where he recorded three touchdowns, left his new teammates in awe.
Barkley's stellar outing saw him rack up 109 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also made crucial contributions as a receiver, catching two passes for 23 yards and an additional touchdown. NBC Sports Philadelphia reported that Barkley's fellow running back, Will Shipley, described his performance as "unbelievable."
Shipley conveyed his admiration for Barkley, stating, "I sit here just smiling because of how special he is. I've seen him do it throughout camp and OTAs, but for him to go out there and showcase his skills in person was something else. He shined tonight, and I was really happy for him. He works so hard, and nobody deserves it more."
Having signed a three-year deal with the Eagles during the first day of free agency, Barkley left behind his successful six-year tenure with the Giants. While he had topped 1,000 yards rushing in three of his seasons with the Giants, the negotiations for a new contract, the franchise tag, and eventually a one-year deal for the 2023 season brought it to a rather sour conclusion.
The shift to the Eagles allowed the Giants to pivot to Devin Singletary, but Barkley's departure remained a major storyline throughout the offseason. This was especially highlighted in the behind-the-scenes series "Hard Knocks," which documented the conversations involving Barkley, general manager Joe Schoen, owner John Mara, and others, discussing the weighty decision concerning their franchise cornerstone. This narrative will continue to unfold when the Eagles face the Giants on October 20 in their first regular-season encounter.
Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson expressed his surprise and admiration for Barkley, saying, "He's one of those guys that I've watched from afar, obviously, with New York, and never thought he'd be here."
Barkley's outstanding performance against the Packers included his first touchdown early in the second quarter, capping an 18-yard completion. Later in the frame, he added another rushing touchdown, and in the late third quarter, Barkley ran the ball in from two yards out for the Eagles' final touchdown, securing them the lead for good.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts commended Barkley's abilities, sharing, "I know he's a great player. He had a hell of a game tonight. It's exciting to watch him play. I'm happy that he's on our side. Just going to keep pressing forward. But what a debut for him."
Barkley and the Eagles will be hosting the Falcons on September 16 for their next matchup. Fans and teammates alike eagerly anticipate Barkley's future performances as he continues to showcase his undeniable talent in an Eagles uniform.
