In an exciting move for the San Jose Sharks, the team announced on Tuesday that they have signed their top prospect, Will Smith, to a three-year, entry-level contract. This deal marks a significant step forward for Smith, as it means he is no longer eligible to return to Boston College for his sophomore year.

Smith, a 19-year-old centerman, shared the news in a video posted on the Sharks' social media platforms. "Just signed my entry-level deal and I can't wait to be a part of the Sharks organization," he revealed enthusiastically to Sharks fans.

During his freshman year with the Boston College Eagles, Smith delivered an impressive performance, accumulating 71 points with 25 goals and 46 assists. He formed a formidable line with fellow prospects Ryan Leonard of the Washington Capitals and Gabe Perreault of the New York Rangers. Together, they guided the Eagles to the NCAA's 2024 National Championship game, where they narrowly lost to Denver with a score of 2-0.

Smith's skills did not go unnoticed, as he and Leonard were invited to compete for Team USA in their first senior World Championship over the past month. As two of just four college players to represent the country in Czechia, their inclusion in the national team showcased their exceptional talents.

The signing of Smith to an entry-level contract has also prompted speculation about Leonard's future plans. Trusted sources within the NHL, including Colby Cohen, Frank Servalli, and Sean Shapiro, believe that Smith's decision to forego further college eligibility could influence Leonard to rethink his choice to return to school. The duo has been linemates for years, having come up together through the US National Development Team Program.

Leonard, who had a remarkable first season in the NCAA, recorded an impressive 60 points with 31 goals and 29 assists in just 40 games. His goal-scoring prowess earned him the distinction of having the third most goals in the country, as well as a new record for the most goals scored by a freshman at Boston College. Brian Gionta's previous record of 30 goals, set in 1998, was surpassed by Leonard's remarkable achievement.

Before Team USA and Smith's signing with the Sharks, the Washington Capitals had approached Leonard regarding an entry-level contract. However, Leonard declined the offer. With recent developments, it remains to be seen if his decision will change.

With the addition of Will Smith to their roster, the San Jose Sharks have strengthened their ranks and secured an exciting prospect for the future. Sharks fans can now look forward to seeing Smith's talents on full display as he embarks on his professional career with the organization.
