San Diego Wave FC, a team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), is dealing with allegations of discrimination against women and a disregard for long-term mental health. The claims were made in a statement posted on social media by former team employee Brittany Alvarado. The club has strongly denied these accusations, describing them as inaccurate and defamatory, and has announced its intention to pursue legal action.
Alvarado's statement, which she personally signed, also singled out club president Jill Ellis, asserting that she fostered an environment where abusive behavior was allowed to flourish. Alvarado called for Ellis to be removed from both the team and the league, claiming that the treatment under her leadership had been deeply detrimental to the mental health of employees.
However, it is important to note that CNN has been unable to independently verify the claims made by Alvarado and has reached out to her for further comment.
In response, Jill Ellis emphasized that mental health is a priority within the club and stated that they have support measures in place for any employee in need. Ellis asserted that the club takes allegations seriously and has thoroughly investigated them, with independent third parties involved when appropriate. Previous evaluations of the workplace have not uncovered any wrongdoing by the club.
The San Diego Wave FC stressed their commitment to fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and excellence. They expressed dismay at the false allegations, stating that they detract from the progress that has been made as a team. The club's focus remains on moving forward and building a strong and unified organization.
Jill Ellis, who previously served as the head coach of the United States Women's National Team (USWNT), where she achieved two World Cup championships, was appointed as the president of San Diego Wave FC in 2021.
Regarding the email exchange mentioned in Alvarado's statement, the club dismissed it as fabricated and denounced the allegations against Ellis as categorically false.
Alvarado also criticized the NWSL, claiming that the league consistently failed to address damaging behaviors within the San Diego Wave FC. A spokesperson for the NWSL responded by affirming that the safety, health, and well-being of everyone associated with the league is their highest priority. They acknowledged allegations of potential misconduct and stated that qualified independent investigators are hired to thoroughly review such claims. The league emphasized its commitment to taking corrective action when allegations are supported by evidence.
Alex Morgan, a current striker for the Wave and a two-time Women's World Cup winner, expressed disappointment at the allegations. Morgan emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive and safe environment for both players and staff within the entire organization. She called for equity in the workplace and acknowledged that there is still much work to be done.
In December 2022, the NWSL and its players' union released an independent investigation report after a 14-month inquiry into allegations of discrimination, harassment, abuse, and retaliation within the league. The report highlighted widespread misconduct directed at NWSL players by individuals in positions of power.
San Diego Wave FC currently sits in 10th place with a record of 3-6-6 and is scheduled to play against the Portland Thorns on Friday.
