In a historic achievement, San Antonio center Victor Wembanyama has become the first player in NBA history to make the league's All-Defensive first team as a rookie. The announcement was made on Tuesday, with Wembanyama receiving votes on 98 of the 99 ballots cast.

Headlining the All-Defensive first team is Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert of Minnesota, who was the only unanimous selection. Wembanyama was joined on the first team by Miami's Bam Adebayo, New Orleans' Herb Jones, and the Los Angeles Lakers' Anthony Davis.

Wembanyama's inclusion on the All-Defensive first team is a testament to his exceptional defensive skills. While many focused on his height of 7'3" and his ability to shoot step-back 3-pointers, Adebayo praised Wembanyama's defensive prowess and acknowledged that his first-team selection is a well-deserved accolade.

The second-team All-Defensive picks consist of Chicago's Alex Caruso, Orlando's Jalen Suggs, Minnesota's Jaden McDaniels, and Boston teammates Derrick White and Jrue Holiday.

For Gobert, it marks his seventh All-Defensive selection, all as a member of the first team. Davis, a five-time All-Defensive player, secured his spot on the first team for the third time. Adebayo, who has made the All-Defensive team five times, received his first nod as a member of the first team. Herb Jones made the team for the first time in his career.

Adebayo expressed his joy at being recognized as a first-team selection, considering it a long time coming and feeling blessed to be among the chosen few.

Wembanyama's remarkable achievement adds him to an elite group of rookies who have been named to the All-Defensive Team in NBA history. The five previous rookies who received this honor all earned second-team nods in their inaugural seasons. They include Tim Duncan (1998), David Robinson (1990), Manute Bol (1986), Hakeem Olajuwon (1985), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1970).

Attention now shifts to the All-NBA team, which will be revealed on Wednesday. If Wembanyama secures his place on that team, he would become the first rookie to earn such recognition in 26 years, since Tim Duncan achieved that feat in 1998.
