Treadmills, a popular piece of fitness equipment used by millions across the globe, are not without their dangers. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 22,000 treadmill-related injuries led to hospital emergency room visits in 2019, with various risks ranging from slips and strains to serious burns, concussions, broken bones, and even fatalities, although rare.

On the home front, children and pets are particularly vulnerable to treadmill mishaps, prompting the CPSC to issue warnings to consumers, including a recent urgent advisory to halt the use of the Peloton Tread+ machine after a tragic incident involving a child's death.

A study on treadmill burns in children conducted at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, revealed the severity of injuries caused by treadmills, emphasizing the profound impact on hand function and potential scarring that can accompany treadmill burns in children, which can be more severe than burns from touching a hot stovetop.

Experts stress the importance of safety measures when using treadmills, from wearing appropriate clothing and footwear to utilizing safety keys and maintaining proper clearances around the machine to prevent accidents and mitigate risks. With proper precautions and adherence to safety guidelines, treadmill users can significantly reduce the likelihood of injuries and maximize the benefits of this popular fitness equipment.

As the treadmill market continues to expand, with projected growth to over $6.5 billion by 2033, it is crucial for users to remain vigilant and prioritize safety to ensure a safe and effective workout experience.
