In a recent announcement, Rocksteady, the developer of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, has revealed that the next patch for the game will be delayed. The patch, which is expected to address numerous bugs and introduce gameplay improvements, including Mutator changes, will now take a backseat as the developer focuses on preparing for the launch of Season 1 in March.
Responding to player demand for the patch, Rocksteady expressed their commitment to delivering a seamless gaming experience and stated that their current priority is "getting the whole game ready to receive our free Season 1 update this month." Season 1 is eagerly anticipated by fans as it will introduce the Joker as a new playable character, along with fresh gear and environments, in line with the game's live service offering.
However, this announcement comes in the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery expressing their disappointment with the performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. During a recent financial call, Warner Bros. Discovery's Chief Financial Officer, Gunnar Wiedenfels, admitted that the game had fallen short of expectations since its release on February 2, priced at $70.
While specific sales figures were not divulged, Warner Bros. Discovery acknowledged that the underperformance of Suicide Squad had created a challenging year-on-year comparison for their game business. Last year, the company's release of Hogwarts Legacy garnered immense success, becoming the best-selling game of 2023.
The struggles faced by Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League are further evident in the declining player count. On Steam, the game's live service action peaked at 13,459 concurrent players, but this number has since plummeted drastically. At present, only 369 individuals were found playing the game on Valve's platform, with a 24-hour peak of 575. Concurrent player numbers for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X and S remain undisclosed.
IGN's review of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League awarded the game a 5/10 rating, citing its repetitive and uninspiring gameplay as a major drawback. Despite a compelling storyline, the game failed to provide a consistently enjoyable experience for players.
As the game's disappointing performance raises questions about Rocksteady's future plans for their live-service model, speculations have arisen regarding upcoming content. In recent reports, an observant player discovered a hidden message within the game that potentially hints at the return of Batman. Additionally, datamining efforts have uncovered strong indications of Flash and Green Lantern making a comeback in some capacity. Other rumored playable characters include Mrs. Freeze (Nora Fries), Lawless, and Deathstroke.
With Season 1 set to launch despite the game's setbacks, players eagerly await further updates on the trajectory of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and how Rocksteady plans to address the game's underperformance moving forward.
