The Colorado Rockies are preparing to welcome back right-hander German Marquez as he is set to be activated from the 60-day injured list tomorrow, according to manager Bud Black. Marquez, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May last year, is finally ready to make his return to the mound after completing his rehabilitation in the familiar Rockies organization.
The 29-year-old Marquez had made just four starts into the 2023 season before his injury, putting his impending free agency in jeopardy. However, in September of the same year, he signed a two-year, $20MM extension with the Rockies, providing him with an opportunity to rebuild his value and demonstrate his talent once again.
Marquez's ability to perform well at Coors Field has been evident throughout his career. From 2018 to 2021, he posted a 4.22 ERA, which was 17% better than the league average based on ERA+, along with an impressive 3.70 FIP across 106 starts for the Rockies. However, his 2022 season raised some concerns as he struggled with a 6.70 ERA in 16 starts at Coors Field compared to a strong 3.34 ERA in 15 starts on the road.
The Rockies, currently with a disappointing 33-62 record this season, have no chance of making the postseason. Nevertheless, Marquez's return could still have implications for the team's decision-making leading up to the trade deadline on July 30. A strong performance from Marquez in his comeback could potentially make the Rockies more open to trading other pieces from their rotation.
Earlier reports suggested that the Rockies were open to offers for right-hander Cal Quantrill, lefty Austin Gomber, and righty Ryan Feltner. Quantrill has had a solid season, posting a 4.13 ERA (110 ERA+) in 19 starts, despite a higher 4.77 FIP. Gomber has been average with a 4.61 ERA (99 ERA+), while Feltner has struggled with a 5.02 ERA, although advanced metrics view him more favorably.
Trading any of these controllable players will be challenging considering the Rockies already possess the worst rotation ERA in the league. However, if Marquez can show that he is back to top form, it would greatly bolster the team's rotation, which recently lost right-hander Dakota Hudson.
Marquez is scheduled to make his return tomorrow with a start against the New York Mets. He is expected to pitch between 75 and 90 pitches as he eases back into action. Rockies fans and management will be eagerly watching to see if Marquez can once again become a reliable and effective starter for the team.
