### Rockies Make Unfortunate MLB History Amid Struggles
The Colorado Rockies have found themselves in the record books this season, but not for reasons they would celebrate. Suffering a 5-3 defeat to the New York Mets on Sunday, the Rockies extended their losing streak to eight games, sinking to a 9-50 record for the season. This makes them the first team in modern MLB history to lose 50 games before reaching 10 wins.
The Rockies managed back-to-back victories only once this season, beating the Atlanta Braves on April 30 and the San Francisco Giants on May 1. Throughout this grueling season, they have experienced four separate eight-game losing streaks. For context, the Rockies had only two such streaks in the past five years combined.
Compounding their woes, the Rockies' current performance starkly contrasts even with some of the MLB's historically poor teams. The 2024 Chicago White Sox, who finished with a dismal 41-121 record, had a better record at the same point in the season than the Rockies' current standing. With their current win percentage of .153, the Rockies are projected to finish with a record of 24-138, potentially the worst in the modern era and the second-worst in MLB history.
Despite playing in a hitter-friendly park, the Rockies have only managed 50 home runs, the fourth-fewest in the majors, and have the lowest number of RBIs at 182. Their team batting average of .215 is the worst in the league.
The pitching staff has also struggled, with a team ERA of 5.59, only marginally better than the Oakland Athletics' 5.68 ERA. The Rockies have surrendered the sixth-most home runs, allowed the most runs, and recorded the fewest strikeouts in baseball.
Although the present looks bleak, there is a glimmer of hope for the future. According to Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter, Colorado has the ninth-best farm system, featuring promising talents such as pitcher Chase Dollander and outfielder Charlie Condon. Yet, this potential for future success doesn't ease the current pain for Rockies fans facing a historically challenging season.
