Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has recently introduced the second generation of its popular R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV. These upgraded models have received significant enhancements, capturing the attention and admiration of electric vehicle enthusiasts.
Both the R1T and R1S now offer improved range, power, and a range of electrical and software updates. While the all-wheel-drive R1 dual motor remains unchanged, Rivian has introduced a new tri-motor system that boasts an impressive 850 horsepower. This system can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 2.9 seconds and provides an estimated range of approximately 380 miles. By utilizing the Conserve Mode to reduce power, Rivian claims that the vehicles can achieve an extended range of 410 miles.
The quad motor of the R1T and R1S has also undergone enhancements, now delivering a staggering 1,200lb-ft of torque with launch mode activated. These powerful vehicles can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, equivalent to some high-end supercars like the 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo S and the 2019 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. Impressively, they can cover a quarter-mile in just 10.5 seconds.
Battery range has been improved as well, with the Rivian Max battery pack now capable of up to 420 miles, while the Larger battery pack offers a maximum range of 330 miles. These upgrades have been praised by the public, who find the extended range particularly impressive.
Public opinion of the second-generation R1T and R1S has generally been positive, with many praising the vehicles' aesthetic appeal. Users on X have described them as beautiful, while others have expressed excitement over the increased range and speed. Some even compare the new R1T to the Tesla Cybertruck, with one Reddit user stating that it is "basically the cybertruck I wanted."
The interior of the vehicles has been highly praised as well, with users complimenting the attention to detail. According to one user on X, "Literally everything is wrapped and stitched. It's wild." Additionally, the new opaque panoramic roof has caught the attention of drivers, offering both shade and privacy.
However, there are some who question the need for increased speed, suggesting that owners and potential buyers may not prioritize it. There are also those who prefer the material choices and interior quality of the Tesla Cybertruck. Some consumers are eagerly anticipating the release of the Rivian R2 and R3 models, suggesting they may hold out for these future offerings.
Despite the positive reception, the high starting prices of the R1T and R1S have proven to be a deterrent for many potential EV buyers, with the R1S priced at $75,900 and the R1T starting at $69,900.
In terms of engineering advancements, Rivian has made significant improvements in its electrical and software systems. The company has managed to reduce 1.8 miles of cabling, resulting in a weight reduction of 44 pounds. This optimization has also led to more efficient control of vehicle performance.
Rivian's upgraded R1T truck and R1S SUV are now available for purchase, marking another milestone in the company's journey to revolutionize the electric vehicle market. With their enhanced range, power, and design, Rivian vehicles continue to captivate enthusiasts and position themselves as formidable contenders in the EV industry.
