Former Boston Ballet dancer and influential advocate for diversity in the arts, Michaela DePrince, has tragically passed away at the young age of 29. DePrince, known for her exceptional talent and unwavering commitment to increasing representation in ballet, leaves behind a profound impact on the dance community and beyond.

During her three-year training with the prestigious Boston Ballet, DePrince not only dazzled audiences with her remarkable skills but also fought tirelessly for the inclusion of more Black and brown dancers in ballet. Using the metaphor of "spreading more poppies in a field of daffodils," she urged for greater diversity within the art form.

Ming Min Hui, Executive Director of the Boston Ballet, emphasized that DePrince's influence extended far beyond the stage. She was a relentless advocate, highlighting ballet as a larger art form that can serve as a source of inspiration and hope for people from all walks of life. In a revealing interview with WCVB in 2023, DePrince reflected on her role in pushing for greater diversity in dance, expressing her desire to see more Black and brown dancers take center stage.

DePrince's journey to ballet began in Sierra Leone, where she was born as Mabinty. Tragically, she lost her parents during the civil war when she was only three years old. After enduring abuse and neglect in an orphanage, her life took a transformative turn when she was adopted by an American family in New Jersey. Her awe-inspiring tale of resilience and triumph served as an inspiration for countless individuals.

Hui further highlighted DePrince's personal warmth and the impact she had on those around her. It was nearly impossible to be part of the Boston Ballet and not experience some form of positive and warm interaction with her. She was deeply loved by her community.

In a heartfelt statement, DePrince's family expressed their grief and shared the profound impact she had on lives worldwide. Her unforgettable story and life journey touched many hearts, and she will forever remain an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her or hearing her story.

DePrince is survived by her seven siblings, who now mourn the loss of a remarkable sister. The cause of her untimely passing has not yet been disclosed.

The dance world and beyond mourn the loss of Michaela DePrince, a visionary force who, through her passion and determination, aspired to make ballet a more inclusive and diverse art form for future generations. Her legacy as an inspiration and advocate will forever live on.
