His manager, Jeffrey Goldberg, confirmed that Todd died on Wednesday in his Los Angeles home. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.
Tony Todd, standing at an impressive 6'5", boasted a versatile acting career with numerous screen credits. His filmography includes memorable roles in movies such as "Platoon," "The Rock," and "Final Destination." However, his breakthrough came in 1992 when he starred as the eponymous ghost of a murdered Black artist in "Candyman." This role, which he portrayed in three additional films, cemented his status as a horror film icon.
Goldberg, who managed Todd for over three decades, shared his sorrow in an email to NPR, stating, "I had the privilege to have Tony as my friend and client for over 30 years and I will miss that amazing man every single day."
Virginia Madsen, who co-starred with Todd in "Candyman," expressed her grief on Instagram, writing, "The great actor Tony Todd has left us and now is an angel. As he was in life. My beloved. May you rest in power sweet to the sweet in heaven."
Beyond his on-screen presence, Todd was also an accomplished stage actor, appearing in both Broadway and off-Broadway shows. Additionally, his distinctive voice lent itself to numerous voice acting roles in films, television shows, and video games.
Reflecting on Todd's legacy, Goldberg remarked, "Those who knew him will remember his warm laugh, generous spirit, and his dedication to his craft. Whether on stage, on screen, or in personal conversations, Tony brought an unyielding honesty that resonated deeply with his friends, family, and fans."
The entertainment industry mourns the loss of a remarkable talent whose impact will be felt for years to come.
