### Pioneering Racer Mary McGee Passes Away at 87
GARDNERVILLE, Nev. – Mary McGee, a trailblazer in the world of racing and the focus of the Oscar-contending documentary "Motorcycle Mary," has passed away at the age of 87. According to a family statement, McGee died due to complications from a stroke at her home in Gardnerville, Nevada, just a day before the release of the documentary on ESPN's YouTube channel.
Mary McGee was a remarkable figure whose legacy in both off-road and motorcycle racing has inspired many athletes since her time. Her family highlighted her unmatched accomplishments and the significant influence she wielded over generations of racers. "Mary embodied resilience, grace, and optimism," they stated, reflecting her role as both a sports pioneer and a compassionate individual.
McGee's distinguished racing career began in auto racing, followed by impressive feats in motorcycle racing. She broke numerous barriers, notably becoming the first individual to solo the challenging Baja 500 off-road race in Mexico in 1975. Her groundbreaking journey in motorsports and life was thoroughly unearthed by researchers in early 2022, revealing the extent of her contributions to the field.
The short documentary "Motorcycle Mary" was executive produced by seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton. Premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June, the film aims to shine a light on McGee's extraordinary career and life. Hamilton took to Instagram to express his sorrow over her passing and admiration for her trailblazing spirit. "My condolences to her family and everyone who she's inspired. Her legacy will live on as a trailblazer in the world of motorsports and beyond," he wrote.
Born in Juneau, Alaska during World War II, McGee was sent to live with her grandparents in Iowa along with her older brother. Encouraged by her brother, who became a race car driver, she entered a male-dominated sport and broke through numerous obstacles. Under the guidance of racing team owner Vasek Polak, McGee shifted from racing Porsche Spyder cars to motorcycles and achieved success in both arenas.
Her friend, the late actor and racing enthusiast Steve McQueen, played a crucial role in persuading her to participate in the Baja 500, further cementing her place in racing history. McGee's list of firsts includes being the first woman to race motocross in the United States, competing internationally, and securing sponsorships from major brands. As a mentor, she was instrumental in paving the way for other women racers.
In recognition of her monumental contributions, McGee was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2018.
