San Francisco 49ers Legend Jimmy Johnson Passes Away at 86
San Francisco 49ers icon and NFL Hall-of-Famer Jimmy Johnson has died at the age of 86. The news of Johnson's passing was confirmed by his family, who informed the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Wednesday night. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Johnson, who was a first-round pick in the 1961 NFL Draft out of UCLA, played his entire 16-year professional career with the San Francisco 49ers. Known for his versatility, Johnson started his NFL journey as a wide receiver before shifting to cornerback in 1964, where he truly made his mark.
Throughout his remarkable career, Johnson showcased his exceptional skills on the field. He was recognized as a first-team All-Pro selection four times and was also named to the league's All-Decade team for the 1970s. Johnson's outstanding performance led to the retirement of his jersey number, 37, by the 49ers in honor of his contributions to the team.
His impact extended beyond the football field. Johnson was the brother of former Olympic decathlon champion Rafer Johnson, who won gold for Team USA at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. In a 1994 interview with The Fresno Bee, Johnson expressed his admiration for his brother, stating, "I've gotten more benefit from being Rafer's brother than I can begin to tell you. He's been my shining light, the person that I've looked up to."
The San Francisco 49ers organization expressed their condolences to Johnson's family and friends in an official statement. The loss of the legendary football player has left the football community in mourning, as Johnson's contributions to the sport and his impact on the team will always be remembered.
