In a major blow to the Boston Red Sox, shortstop Trevor Story is set to undergo surgery to repair a fractured glenoid in his shoulder. The news was confirmed by Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow during a press conference, where he revealed that Story's timetable for return is approximately six months, ruling him out for the remainder of the regular season.
The concerns surrounding Story's shoulder were initially voiced by Red Sox manager Alex Cora in a press briefing before the team's home opener. Cora expressed worry over the "bone structure" of Story's shoulder, which was injured when the shortstop landed awkwardly during a game against the Angels last Friday. The following day, Story was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder dislocation. Seeking a second opinion, Story will consult renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who may recommend surgery as a potential treatment option.
To address the absence of Story in the lineup, Cora intends to implement a platoon system in the middle infield going forward. David Hamilton, a left-handed batter, and Romy Gonzalez, a right-handed batter, will split playing time at shortstop, while Pablo Reyes (left-handed) and Enmanuel Valdez (right-handed) will share duties at second base. Additionally, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela is being considered as a versatile option for either position, given his exceptional defensive skills. The Red Sox boast ample outfield depth, with Jarren Duran capable of shifting to center field, while Tyler O'Neill and Wilyer Abreu hold down the corners.
Meanwhile, during his upcoming rehab assignment, Vaughn Grissom is expected to take reps at shortstop, although his primary position remains second base. However, if the need arises due to Story's surgery, the Red Sox could deploy Grissom at shortstop, drawing from his prior experience in the minor leagues.
Story, who immediately recognized the gravity of his injury, had not given up hope of returning to the field in 2024. However, the second opinion from Dr. ElAttrache could potentially put an end to his season. A similar injury sidelined Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell last April, and he returned for only the final four games of the year following surgery.
The Red Sox will undoubtedly feel the impact of Story's absence, as his offensive prowess and defensive skills have played an integral role in the team's success this season. With a long road to recovery ahead, the organization will need to rely on their infield depth to fill the void left by the talented shortstop.
