Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story will be unable to play for the rest of the 2024 season after suffering a fractured glenoid in his shoulder. The team's general manager, Craig Breslow, confirmed the news during a press conference on Tuesday. Story will undergo surgery to repair the injury and will require a minimum of six months to recover, ruling out any chance of his return this year.
The injury occurred during Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels, when Story landed awkwardly on a diving play while trying to corral a batted ball by Mike Trout in the fourth inning. After receiving medical attention on the field, he had to leave the game. An MRI conducted in Seattle the following day revealed a left shoulder dislocation, resulting in the Red Sox placing him on the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, infielder David Hamilton was recalled to the team.
Story, 31, had started the 2024 season with a batting average of .241, an on-base percentage of .313, and a slugging percentage of .345. He had driven in four runs over the course of his first seven games. Friday night's game marked his 145th appearance since joining the Red Sox in 2022, as he had missed significant time in the previous season due to surgery on his ulnar collateral ligament. In 2022, he also spent time on the sidelines with a hairline fracture in his wrist.
The loss of Story is a significant blow to the Red Sox, as he had become a leader on the team and played a crucial role in their goals and aspirations. Manager Alex Cora expressed his disappointment at the injury, acknowledging Story's dedication and hard work during the offseason. The team will now have to figure out how to distribute playing time at shortstop among other players like Pablo Reyes, Romy Gonzalez, and Vaughn Grissom, who is also recovering from an injury. Additionally, top shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer began his season at the Double-A level on Friday.
Prior to joining the Red Sox, Story had an impressive career with the Colorado Rockies, where he batted .272 with 158 home runs and 100 stolen bases over six seasons. He earned two All-Star selections and a Silver Slugger Award. With an estimated Wins Above Replacement of 30.4, Story's contributions on both offense and defense will be sorely missed by the Red Sox.
As Story embarks on his recovery journey, the Red Sox will have to adapt and find ways to fill the void left by their star shortstop.
