The Boston Red Sox have made a significant move by acquiring reliever Lucas Sims from the Cincinnati Reds. In exchange, the Red Sox are sending pitching prospect Ovis Portes back to Cincinnati. This deal also involves Boston designating left-hander Brandon Walter for assignment to create a spot on the 40-man roster.
Sims, a 30-year-old right-handed pitcher, has shown promise as a reliever, with a career spanning multiple seasons with the Reds. Originally a first-round pick by the Braves, Sims struggled early in his career before finding success in Cincinnati's bullpen. Despite battling injuries, Sims has demonstrated strong pitching performance, recording a 3.10 ERA in 61 innings during the previous season. With a 3.57 ERA this season, Sims continues to display his ability to strike batters out at an above-average rate.
Additionally, Sims' solid pitching skills come with some areas of improvement, such as better control and reducing his home run susceptibility. Nevertheless, the Red Sox view Sims as a valuable addition to their bullpen, providing depth and a right-handed setup option for manager Alex Cora. With his contract expiring after this season, Sims is expected to hit free agency next winter.
In return for Sims, the Reds receive pitching prospect Ovis Portes, a talented 19-year-old right-hander from Antigua and Barbuda. Portes, who has shown potential in the low minors, possesses an impressive fastball that reaches up to 99 MPH. Despite needing further development in his secondary pitches and control, Portes has caught the attention of scouts with his raw talent and velocity.
This trade signifies a strategic move for both teams, as the Red Sox bolster their bullpen with the addition of Sims while the Reds acquire a promising pitching prospect in Portes. With the MLB trade deadline approaching, teams continue to make moves to strengthen their rosters for the remainder of the season.
