In an unprecedented wave of scorching temperatures, around 40 daily temperature records were shattered across Russia and Crimea on Tuesday, according to the Phobos weather center. The country is currently experiencing a heatwave that has engulfed regions from the central parts to the Far East, with some areas reaching a staggering maximum temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius.

Mikhail Leus from the Phobos weather center warned that this powerful surge of record-breaking heat has persisted for four consecutive days and shows no signs of abating. Meteorologists have even dubbed this July in Russia as "the hottest in the entire era of global warming," surpassing the extreme heat witnessed in July 2010.

Moscow, the capital city, sweltered under temperatures of 32 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, marking the highest ever recorded temperature for this day in the past 134 years. Meanwhile, the southern Krasnodar region experienced soaring temperatures of 35.9 degrees Celsius in Primorsko-Akhtarsk and 34.3 degrees Celsius in Anapa. In Vladivostok, a new record of 27.4 degrees Celsius was set.

The annexed Crimean Peninsula also battled with the heat, as Simferopol recorded a scorching temperature of 35.3 degrees Celsius, while Yalta reached 35.1 degrees Celsius. These unprecedented conditions have led to increased concerns about the impact on residents and infrastructure.

In addition to the discomfort faced by civilians, the hot and dry weather has also fueled the spread of wildfires in the Far East Zabaykalsky region, further exacerbating the situation.

Unfortunately, relief appears to be elusive as the extreme heat is expected to persist throughout the week. The mercury in Moscow is predicted to hit 31.1 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning, further adding to the heatwave.

As authorities and residents grapple with the consequences of this heatwave, it serves as another stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by climate change. The need for effective measures to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events becomes more urgent than ever before.
