In a bid to remove Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos from office, supporters of a recall campaign announced on Sunday that they have successfully collected enough signatures to force a recall vote. The campaign, which began in January, plans to present the signatures to the Wisconsin Elections Commission on Monday, stating that they have exceeded the required 6,850 signatures from voters in Vos' southeast Wisconsin district.

Matt Snorek, the initiator of the campaign, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response, stating that the more than 10,000 signatures on the recall petition "speak volumes" about the electorate's desire for change and new representation. However, Vos continues to dismiss the recall attempt as a futile endeavor, calling it a waste of time and resources. In a statement, he expressed doubts about the group's tactics and promised that his team would thoroughly evaluate each individual signature.

The recall effort against Vos highlights the ongoing frustration among supporters of former President Donald Trump in battleground Wisconsin. Many seek accountability for what they perceive as Vos' inadequate response to Trump's loss in the 2020 election. This includes his refusal to support efforts to decertify President Joe Biden's victory and his failure to initiate impeachment proceedings against Wisconsin's top elections official.

The 2020 election saw Trump lose Wisconsin to Biden by a narrow margin of about 21,000 votes, despite having won the state in 2016. The result has withstood multiple challenges, including partial recounts, lawsuits, an independent audit, and a review by a conservative law firm.

The announcement of the recall campaign comes after the Wisconsin Supreme Court recently declined to address Democratic Governor Tony Evers' request for clarification on whether Wisconsin's new legislative district maps apply to elections before November. This has left uncertainty regarding the collection of signatures for the recall attempt in Vos' new district. Nevertheless, Snorek stated that they interpreted the court's decision as an indication that their efforts in Vos' current district were valid.

First elected in 2004, Vos holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Assembly speaker in Wisconsin's state history, having assumed the role in 2013. As the recall effort gains momentum, it remains to be seen how this political battle will unfold and whether Vos will be able to retain his position of power.
