In a recent excerpt from her upcoming memoir "Rebel Rising," actress Rebel Wilson details her uncomfortable experiences while working with Sacha Baron Cohen on the set of the 2016 comedy "The Brothers Grimsby." Wilson alleges that Baron Cohen made inappropriate requests and created a hostile work environment.
According to Wilson, she and Baron Cohen first met at a dinner party in 2013 where he later approached her to play his character's girlfriend in the film. During filming at a soccer stadium in Cape Town, Wilson claims that Baron Cohen had a production assistant inform her that an additional scene was needed. It was during this scene that Baron Cohen allegedly pulled down his pants and asked Wilson to stick her finger up his backside.
Feeling frightened and uncomfortable, Wilson compromised by slapping Baron Cohen on the buttocks and improvising a few lines as her character. Following this incident, she called her agent and spoke with a lawyer about the situation. Both advised her to remain professional and complete the film.
Wilson also mentioned being asked to do reshoots, including a sex scene, which further contributed to her discomfort on set. Despite demanding rewrites, she ultimately filmed the scene but refused to participate in any promotional activities for the film.
In response to Wilson's claims, Baron Cohen denied the allegations through a statement from his representative. The statement emphasized that Wilson's accusations were contradicted by extensive evidence, including contemporaneous documents, film footage, and eyewitness accounts from those involved in the production of the film.
Baron Cohen's team also provided nine anonymous statements supporting the actor, with five individuals who were present during the Cape Town scene disputing Wilson's account. They stated that the scene was scripted, and at no point did Baron Cohen request Wilson to put a finger in his backside.
Wilson's sister, Liberty, and an anonymous friend confirmed to People magazine that the actress had shared her uncomfortable experience shortly after filming the scene. Wilson herself took to social media, sharing her frustration with Baron Cohen and vowing not to be silenced by his legal team.
The release of Wilson's memoir has sparked a conversation on the treatment of women in the entertainment industry. Wilson expressed her hope that by sharing her story, it will encourage more women to speak out against such behavior.
As the controversy surrounding "The Brothers Grimsby" continues to unfold, both Wilson and Baron Cohen are expected to face further scrutiny. It remains to be seen how this evolving narrative will impact their respective careers and the broader dialogue on workplace conduct within the film industry.
