In an intense negotiation that stretched into the final minutes before training camp, the Los Angeles Rams secured a contract adjustment with quarterback Matthew Stafford. Rams head coach Sean McVay announced the news during his training camp news conference at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday.

The contract adjustment does not involve an extension, and specific details of the deal were not disclosed by McVay. However, he expressed relief that the negotiations were successfully concluded.

The discussions between the Rams' front office, McVay, and Stafford's agent centered around a contract adjustment that the veteran quarterback had sought since the end of the previous season. Stafford, who led the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance in 2022, was originally set to earn $31 million for the upcoming season, with a hefty salary-cap number of $49.5 million.

Under the terms of his previous extension, Stafford had two additional years remaining in 2025 and 2026, with only $15 million of his $27 million salary in 2025 guaranteed. None of the $26 million due in 2026 was guaranteed, according to a source familiar with the situation.

According to the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, if Stafford had not reported to training camp by noon on Tuesday, he would have incurred fines of $50,000 per day. However, the contractual adjustment was reached just in time to avoid any potential holdout.

McVay acknowledged that there had been communication between the team and Stafford since the beginning of free agency, with the quarterback's representatives reaching out to the Rams. During the NFL draft in April, reports surfaced that Stafford was seeking an adjustment to increase his guaranteed money beyond the current season.

While negotiations with Stafford's camp went through various stages, McVay expressed his commitment to ensuring that the quarterback felt appreciated and valued by the team. The Rams' expectations for Stafford's leadership are high, considering the successful season they achieved last year and the team's aspirations for an even better performance this year.

Stafford, who attended voluntary offseason workouts and organized team activities, remained silent on the matter, not speaking to reporters publicly since the disappointing loss against the Detroit Lions in the NFC wild-card game last January.

With the contract adjustment in place, the Rams can now focus on their preparations for the upcoming season. The team's training camp will see them transition from their longtime venue at Cal Lutheran University to a new location in Woodland Hills at Loyola Marymount University.

As the Rams aim to build upon their 10-7 finish last season and secure another playoff appearance, Stafford's value to the team becomes even more critical. The uncertainty surrounding the backup quarterback situation, with Jimmy Garoppolo serving a suspension for the first two games, further emphasizes Stafford's importance to the team's success.

With the contract adjustment resolved, the Rams can now move forward with the assurance of having their experienced and talented quarterback leading the roster. The upcoming season holds significant promise for the Rams as they aim to clinch a Super Bowl victory.
