In a press conference held at the Rams' training camp, head coach Sean McVay announced that the team has reached an agreement with quarterback Matthew Stafford on a contract rework. The announcement followed a meeting between Stafford, McVay, and other team executives to finalize the details.

McVay clarified that the agreement does not involve a contract extension but instead entails restructuring the remaining years on Stafford's current deal. The 36-year-old quarterback had signed a four-year extension worth $160 million with the Rams after their Super Bowl victory in 2022. However, the last two years of the contract had no guaranteed money.

Stafford's discontent regarding the lack of guaranteed money became evident during the NFL draft when it became clear that the Rams were not prioritizing a high-end draft pick for a potential successor. Discussions between the team and Stafford's representatives began during the early stages of free agency.

The specific terms of the reworked contract were not disclosed by McVay. However, reports indicated that Stafford's concerns centered around the lack of guarantee for 2025 and 2026. Previously, only $15 million of his $27 million salary in 2025 and none of the $26 million in 2026 were guaranteed.

The negotiations between the Rams and Stafford progressed over the past week, culminating in a 12-hour meeting to iron out the final details. McVay, along with VP of football and business administration Tony Pastoors, met with Stafford in person, while Rams general manager Les Snead, team president Kevin Demoff, and Stafford's agent Jimmy Sexton joined virtually.

McVay expressed his gratitude for the "healthy and honest" dialogue that took place during the negotiations. He emphasized the importance of the relationship he has with Stafford, appreciating their ability to provide honest feedback. The head coach expressed relief that the issue was resolved, stating that the manner in which the agreement was reached was beneficial for all parties involved.

Stafford, who participated fully in the Rams' offseason program, reported to training camp without any threat of a holdout. McVay acknowledged that there were prior communications regarding the potential for a holdout but expressed satisfaction that an agreement was reached, eliminating the need for such a scenario.

With the contract restructure now settled, the Rams can focus on their preparations for the upcoming season. Stafford's presence as the team's starting quarterback brings stability and optimism as they strive for success on the field.

The Rams kick off their training camp with the anticipation of a promising season ahead, driven by their restructured commitment to Matthew Stafford as their leader on the field.
