Cars were already fired up and ready to hit the track for pace laps when a storm cell approached the speedway from the north. As a result, the field had to retreat to pit road where crew members swiftly covered the cars.
The National Weather Service has predicted a high chance of precipitation, ranging from 72% to 82%, until 7 p.m. Sunday. Unfortunately, Michigan International Speedway does not have lights, putting a time constraint on completing the race on the same day. This adds to the challenges faced by the racing event, as scattered showers and thunderstorms have plagued the race weekend since Friday.
The weather disruptions started on Saturday during the Xfinity Series race, which had multiple red flags due to inclement weather. Earlier in the day, Cup practice and qualifying were also canceled. However, race officials remained hopeful that the conditions would improve for the main event.
It is worth noting that last year's race at Michigan had to be postponed and finished on a Monday due to similar weather conditions. Chris Buescher, the defending race champion, will be looking to defend his title whenever the race resumes.
As of now, there is no confirmed start time for the NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 race. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
