Public health officials and outreach teams at the University of California, Los Angeles are sounding the alarm as cases of mpox, a highly contagious and potentially severe disease, are witnessing an alarming increase. Despite the disease being out of the spotlight, experts warn that the lack of awareness about the ongoing risk has hindered vaccination efforts, leaving a staggering 77% of those at risk across the nation unvaccinated.
As Pride Month unfolds, public health officials have taken the opportunity to emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated. Army Cachero, part of the public health outreach team at UCLA, expressed concern about the resurgence of mpox, which initially broke out in the United States and several other countries in 2022. The lack of media coverage has led many to overlook the urgency for vaccination, according to Cachero in a statement to CBS News.
Jose Velasquez, who experienced the debilitating effects of mpox in 2022, recalls the fear and pain he endured during his hospitalization. He willingly rolled up his sleeve to receive the vaccine, feeling a sense of relief after receiving the shot. However, despite stories like Velasquez's, only a fraction of the population at risk has taken the necessary steps to protect themselves.
Particular focus must be given to men who have sex with men and trans women, as they are at the highest risk of mpox infection. Unfortunately, several barriers hinder successful vaccination campaigns among these vulnerable populations. Misinformation, lack of access to healthcare, and a general lack of trust all contribute to the lower vaccination rates, especially among people of color.
Across the nation, public health officials are scrambling to prevent a repeat of the panic and confusion experienced during the summer of 2022 when the initial outbreak occurred. Nick Diamond and Keletso Makofane, public health advocates in New York, have conducted research showing that many individuals at risk connect online and engage in private home gatherings, highlighting the need for adapted public health messaging strategies.
Makofane emphasizes the importance of collaboration, urgency, and speed in order to effectively address the ongoing threat of mpox. Failure to adapt and act swiftly may lead to unnecessary suffering.
As the number of mpox cases continues to rise, public health officials urge everyone at risk to prioritize vaccination. It is essential for individuals to remain informed, seek accurate information, and act responsibly to prevent the further spread of this concerning disease.
