The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued a warning to customers who purchased items from the seafood counter at a Whole Foods Market in Beverly Hills. Following the discovery of a possible hepatitis A infection, officials are urging those who may have been exposed to seek a hepatitis A vaccine.

The infection was reportedly found at the Whole Foods Market located at 239 N. Crescent Drive. An employee who worked at the seafood counter section between April 20 and May 13 is believed to have contracted the virus. While no additional cases have been detected thus far, the investigation is still ongoing.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection that can be transmitted even before symptoms appear. It is spread through the stool and blood of infected individuals as well as contaminated food. Symptoms of the virus include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dark urine, and yellowing of the eyes and skin. In rare cases, it can lead to death.

The Department of Public Health emphasizes that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the disease as there is currently no specific antiviral treatment for hepatitis A. Prompt vaccination is crucial, as individuals can still fall ill if they fail to receive the vaccine soon after exposure. Older adults and those with weakened immune systems may also require immune globulin in addition to the vaccine to prevent infection.

In light of the recent outbreak of hepatitis A among the homeless population in LA County, health officials are working closely with Whole Foods to ensure that all employees are referred for vaccination. Customers who visited the seafood counter during the specified period, April 20 to May 13, are strongly advised to contact their pharmacy or healthcare provider to receive the recommended vaccine.

Preventing the further spread of hepatitis A is of utmost importance, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is closely monitoring the situation. Residents are urged to stay updated on any new developments and to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their health and well-being.
