In a surprising move, Prime Video has announced the cancellation of its unique western-sci-fi series, "Outer Range," after two successful seasons. The decision comes just under two months after the show's second season premiered with a binge-release strategy, leaving fans disappointed.
"Outer Range" captivated audiences with its compelling storyline, blending elements of western and science fiction genres. The series followed the journey of Josh Brolin's character, a Wyoming rancher, as he made a startling discovery of a mysterious black void on his property. Simultaneously, he struggled to protect his land from a rival family, fueling a long-standing feud between them.
The show boasted a talented cast, with the likes of Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Isabel Arraiza, Olive Abercrombie, and Will Patton captivating viewers with their performances.
"Outer Range" premiered on Prime Video in April 2022 and received a second-season renewal in October of the same year. The show also underwent a shift in showrunners during this time, with Charles Murray taking over from Zev Borow.
While "Outer Range" may not have reached the level of popularity achieved by other notable Prime Video shows like "Fallout" and "Reacher," it garnered reasonable success for the streaming platform. The first season of the series spent an impressive five weeks in Nielsen's rankings of the top 10 original streaming series, and as of June 2, the second season has also enjoyed three weeks on the chart, according to the most recent available data.
The production of "Outer Range" was a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Plan B Entertainment. Season two was executive produced by prominent figures such as Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Ernest McNealey of Plan B, along with Josh Brolin, Tony Krantz, Heather Rae, and Jon Paré.
Prime Video's decision to cancel "Outer Range" has left fans and industry insiders speculating about the reasons behind the move. While the series had garnered a dedicated following, it seems that it didn't meet the network's internal expectations for continued investment.
As fans express their disappointment over the cancellation, they will no doubt hope for the possibility of "Outer Range" finding a new home on another streaming platform or network. For now, viewers will have to bid farewell to the intriguing blend of western and sci-fi storytelling that made "Outer Range" a distinct and memorable series during its brief run.
