In a recent campaign event held in North Carolina, President Joe Biden emphasized the need to extend the subsidy boost under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), popularly known as "Obamacare." The boost, which is set to expire after 2025, has played a significant role in expanding healthcare coverage for millions of Americans.

President Biden proudly highlighted his efforts in strengthening the ACA by signing into law enhanced subsidies under the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act. As a result, ACA enrollment has reached an all-time high of 45 million individuals, according to government figures.

The president expressed his concern over the expiration of tax credits next year, which could potentially lead to millions of Americans losing their coverage. To address this issue, Biden called on Congress to make the expanded affordable health care tax credit of $800 per person per year permanent.

The extension of this subsidy boost has become a crucial health care policy implication in the upcoming election, with the outcome determining whether it remains intact. Biden sees the preservation of this funding as part of his legacy, while his Republican rival, Donald Trump, has not shared his stance on the matter or proposed an alternative healthcare plan.

The ACA, enacted by President Barack Obama in 2010, provides tax subsidies to individuals up to 400% of the federal poverty level to access insurance coverage. In 2021, Biden and the Democratic-controlled Congress introduced a provision that assists individuals above that level by capping premiums at 8.5% of their income. These policies have facilitated insurance purchases for millions and lowered premiums for existing policyholders.

While Biden highlighted the lack of support from Republicans for the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act, Trump's campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, mentioned the former president's commitment to making healthcare more affordable without providing further details.

During his tenure, Trump made numerous attempts to roll back the ACA through executive actions, legislation, and legal battles. While he succeeded in eliminating the penalty for not having insurance, he faced obstacles in repealing the law's insurance regulations and subsidies.

Trump's renewed calls for replacing the ACA in 2023 as a presidential candidate garnered criticism within his own party. Although he emphasized the need for better healthcare, he did not present a specific plan, leaving Republicans without a clear alternative to the ACA's benefits and coverage.

In response to Trump's potential threat to the ACA, Biden assured his supporters that he would not let the law be terminated and endanger the lives of millions relying on it. The president vowed to continue fighting to protect the ACA and expand access to affordable healthcare.

As the election approaches, the extension of the ACA subsidy boost remains a significant point of contention between the two candidates. Biden called for its permanence, arguing that it is essential for the well-being of millions of Americans, while Trump's position on the matter remains uncertain.

With the fate of the ACA in the hands of voters, the outcome of the election will undoubtedly shape the future of healthcare policy in the United States.
