In his weekly Angelus address on Sunday, Pope Francis offered a comforting message to the faithful amidst uncertainty and fear, urging them to draw fearlessly toward Christ who will bring calm to any storm. Speaking to thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square, the Holy Father reflected on the Gospel reading from St. Mark, recounting the story of Jesus and the disciples in a boat on Lake Tiberias.
During the episode, a sudden and strong storm threatened the sinking of the boat, causing the disciples to feel terrified as Jesus slept. However, the Pope emphasized that the Lord had complete control over the situation and used it as an opportunity to teach them about trust. Despite the initial fear, the disciples emerged from this experience with a heightened awareness of Jesus' power and presence among them.
Pope Francis noted that conflicts require peaceful solutions and negotiations. He appealed for leaders to act responsibly, cultivate peace, and pursue negotiations to ongoing conflicts and wars. The Holy Father explained that the frightening episode strengthened the disciples' faith and increased their courage to face future obstacles, including the fear of proclaiming the Gospel.
The Pope suggested that Jesus does the same with believers today. Through the Eucharist, Christ gathers people, provides nourishment through His Word, and invites them to share their faith in everyday life, even in challenging circumstances. He emphasized that the Lord never abandons His followers and helps them face difficult times.
By clinging to Jesus during storms of uncertainty and hesitations, we can overcome these obstacles with His help. Pope Francis encouraged the faithful to take solace in the moments when they have experienced the presence and assistance of the Lord. He also highlighted the importance of prayer, silence, listening to the Word, adoration, and fraternal sharing of faith to find calm and peace amidst turmoil.
Concluding his address, Pope Francis implored the Virgin Mary, who accepted God's will with humility and courage, to grant serenity of abandonment in Him during difficult moments. With faith and trust in Christ, the faithful can proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven, making it grow beyond all barriers.
Pope Francis' message serves as a reminder to all believers to place their trust in the Lord, finding strength and calm in times of trials and storms.
