In a new poll published on Saturday, President Joe Biden is facing troubling news as he loses a double-digit percentage of his 2020 supporters to former President Donald Trump. The survey, conducted by The New York Times and Siena College, shows that 10 percent of those who previously backed Biden now plan to support Trump in the upcoming election.

Notably, the polling indicates that Trump has maintained the support of 97 percent of his 2020 supporters, while Biden only retains the backing of 83 percent of his former voters. These figures highlight a significant shift in voter preference, with Trump leading Biden by 5 points in the overall poll results - 48 percent for the Republican former president compared to 43 percent for the Democratic incumbent.

The polling data also reveals the ongoing unpopularity of both politicians, with a majority of Americans expressing disinterest in seeing either Biden or Trump run for office. Biden, at 81 years old, faces concerns about his age and mental competence, as well as criticism of his handling of the economy and the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. Meanwhile, Trump, 77, is contending with questions regarding his age and fitness for office, along with a barrage of legal troubles including 91 criminal charges.

Despite trailing in the polls, Biden's supporters remain optimistic, pointing to previous electoral successes and campaign platforms centered on issues such as abortion access. They believe that voters will ultimately reject Trump's "extreme" agenda and choose to back Biden. On the other hand, Republicans argue that voters will see through Biden's perceived weaknesses, particularly his handling of the economy and foreign policy. They also assert that the charges against Trump are politically motivated.

The polling conducted from February 25 to 28 included 823 respondents, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent. FiveThirtyEight, a renowned news and polling analysis site, ranks the Times/Siena pollster as the top pollster in the country.

The current RealClearPolitics average of national polls, which incorporates the Times/Siena data, shows Biden trailing Trump by approximately 2.3 percent. Biden holds an average of 45 percent support compared to Trump's 47.3 percent. Similarly, earlier polls conducted in swing states this year also suggest Trump leading Biden in key states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

As the 2024 election looms ever closer, these latest polling results indicate a challenging road ahead for President Biden. However, in a constantly changing political landscape, it remains to be seen how these figures will sway public opinion as voters ultimately make their choices known.
