In a tragic incident that has shocked the community of Plantation, a 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder. Jean Carlos Aponte is accused of killing his wife, Sara Ashley Gama, 38, and their 2-year-old son, Ethan. Details surrounding the tragic event remain undisclosed by the police.
The incident came to light on Tuesday when the lifeless bodies of Gama and Ethan were discovered inside their residence. Aponte was found in critical condition, having apparently attempted to take his own life through a self-induced drug overdose. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency medical care.
Neighbours have reported that the couple's newborn baby was unharmed and has since been taken in by family members. Aponte, a former military service member and Purple Heart honoree, had recently sought help to address his mental health struggles. He had reached out to the Catch A Lift Fund, an organization that provides mental health support for veterans through physical exercise.
Chris Haley, an Army veteran and Purple Heart honoree himself, confirmed that Aponte had been accepted into the program. Reflecting on the devastating turn of events, Haley expressed his disappointment, stating, "It's a bummer because that is the whole reason why our organization exists, it's to kind of stop this. So when it does happen, it's pretty shocking because that's kinda what we're trying to avoid."
According to Haley, Aponte was dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a traumatic brain injury resulting from his military service. He expressed that Aponte had a strong desire to make things right and be a positive example for his family. "He wanted to do things right and be a positive example for his family," Haley recalled.
The police have not released any information regarding the motive or method employed by Aponte in the alleged killings of his wife and child. However, Haley attested to Aponte's ongoing struggle with his mental health. "He was struggling. I couldn't tell if it was severe, but it's a struggle, and I think he wanted to get better," Haley said. "I don't think he wanted to be miserable, and I think he realized you got to do something for yourself sometimes."
Adding to the heartbreaking turn of events, a neighbor shared Ring camera footage showing Aponte walking with his 2-year-old son just a day before the incident occurred.
The community in Plantation is left reeling from this tragic event, reminding us of the vital importance of mental health support and raising awareness about the challenges faced by veterans. The authorities continue to investigate the case to shed light on the circumstances that led to the loss of two innocent lives.
